Every golfer knows the gap between what a swing feels like and what it actually looks like. At the range, that gap usually stays open: you would have to film yourself, walk to the phone, find the clip, watch it, delete it, and set up again, for every single ball. Almost nobody does that past the third swing.
There is a simpler setup. Put an iPhone or iPad on a tripod, open Video Delay Instant Replay, and the screen shows the camera feed on a delay you choose. Hit the ball, look up, and there is your swing, playing back on its own. No taps between balls, no clips to manage, nothing to delete. The next swing simply appears after the next ball.
The range setup in one minute
- Tripod behind you for the down-the-line view, or facing you for face-on. Down the line is the classic teaching view for checking posture and club path.
- Set the delay to roughly the time between finishing your swing and looking at the screen. A few seconds is typical at the range.
- Hit balls. Watch each swing after impact, make one adjustment, and hit the next.
If you have two devices, one iPhone can act as the camera behind you while an iPad in the hitting bay shows the delayed feed, so you never turn around. When something is worth keeping, open the replay to see it in slow motion and step frame by frame, and export it as a normal MP4.
Your tempo, measured automatically
Tempo is the ratio of your backswing time to your downswing time, and the famous tour reference is 3 to 1. Feeling your tempo is hard; measuring it by hand means counting frames in a video editor.
The app’s Golf Tempo AI preset does it for you, live. It detects each completed swing on its own, tracks the backswing and downswing phases, and shows a banner with your ratio, for example TEMPO 3.0 : 1, with the backswing and downswing times in milliseconds. Detection runs while the swing happens, so by the time the delayed replay reaches the screen, your swing is already annotated. Swing, look up, see your number, adjust, repeat. The pose tracking runs on the device itself.
The head line and the butt line
Ask a teaching pro to diagnose a swing from down the line and two reference lines come out immediately: a line at the head and a line at the backside. Golfers know them as the head line and the butt line.
- The butt line is the standard check for early extension, the hips moving toward the ball in the downswing. It is one of the most common faults in amateur golf. If your backside leaves the line during the downswing, you are extending early.
- The head line shows head dip and rise through the swing.
The Golf Guidelines preset freezes these reference lines when you are at address, and the Golf Auto preset does it hands free: it waits for you to settle at address, freezes the lines by itself, and clears them after the swing. Every delayed replay then shows your swing against your own address position, ball after ball, with nobody touching the screen.
What about deep swing analysis afterwards?
The range screen is for feedback while you practice. When you want to sit down with a recorded swing, compare this month against last month side by side, draw on the video, and measure positions frame by frame, that is a different job, and we built a separate app for it: Coach Video Analysis. The two work together: record and export your best and worst swings from the range session as MP4, then break them down afterwards.
Video Delay Instant Replay is a subscription app, and you can try it free before subscribing, with no payment details and no auto-renewing trial to cancel.
Frequently asked questions
How can I see my own golf swing at the driving range?
Put an iPhone or iPad on a tripod and use a video delay app. Video Delay Instant Replay shows the camera feed a few seconds late, so after each ball you look up and watch the swing you just made, hands free, with no recording to start or stop.
What is a good golf swing tempo?
The widely cited tour reference is a 3 to 1 ratio: the backswing takes about three times as long as the downswing. Video Delay Instant Replay’s Golf Tempo preset detects each swing and shows your ratio automatically after every ball.
How do I check early extension on video?
Freeze a vertical reference line at your backside at address, then watch whether your hips move off the line toward the ball during the downswing. Golfers call this the butt line, and the app’s Golf Guidelines and Golf Auto presets draw and freeze it for you at address.
Do I need someone to film me?
No. The delay does the work: the app continuously shows the recent past, so every swing plays back on its own while you are looking at the screen. With two devices, the phone films from behind while an iPad in the bay shows the delayed feed.
Can I save swings from the session?
Yes. Recordings export as standard MP4 files, so you can keep your best and worst swings, share them, or load them into an analysis app afterwards.
Can I watch my swing in slow motion at the range?
Yes.Tap Replay button for slow motion playback or step it frame by frame. The app records at up to 240 fps at 1080p, which is plenty to see the club through impact.
